Civic body orders all ward offices to clean up dug wells in their areas to supplement water supply for domestic use in the city.

With the city facing an imminent water scarcity this summer, the civic body seems to have decided to dig a little deeper to find a solution. Now, the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) will try to keep tabs on water resources like borewells and dug wells across the city, as the civic body’s water supply department has issued an order to all ward offices to undertake cleaning work of dug wells within their limits.

Currently, a majority of these lie unused, with broken covers, garbage thrown in, and a visible lack of maintenance. In 2010, PMC had requested the Ground Water Survey and Development Authority (GSDA) to conduct a survey to identify water resources in the city.

According to the survey, the authority found 4,820 borewells and 399 dug wells in the city, out of which 1,575 borewells and 155 dug wells could be used for drinking water. Besides, the corporation also told GSDA to submit additional feasible places to dig borewells to obtain drinking water, in which the authority identified 530 spots. However, PMC has not dug at these spots yet.

Areas where dug wells can be found in the city include Rasta Peth, Kasba Peth, Ghorpade Peth, Hadapsar, Wadgaonsheri, Baner, Pashan, Bibvewadi, Katraj, Kothrud, Yerwada, Vishrantwadi, Koregaon Park, Budhwar Peth, Shaniwar Peth, Guruwar Peth, Raviwar Peth, and a few others.

At the time, GSDA had also told PMC that the water in the secondary sources they identified was sufficient to last the city for an entire year. However, they had suggested that tests be conducted on water samples in a government laboratory, to determine their potability After nearly three years, the city is facing a water crunch this summer, to address which the PMC has already instituted a 20 per cent cut in drinking water since late last year.

However, considering that the situation may become worse in coming days, the Water Supply department is swinging into action to clean the available dug wells, for water to be used for domestic purposes. Head of PMC’s Water Supply department, said, “We are taking precautionary measures considering the prevailing water scarcity.

We have given orders to three zonal superintendents to start work to clean public dug wells. Out of the 399 dug wells in the city, there are almost 80 public dug wells. The rest are private, and we cannot clean those.

PMC should activate drawing of water from dhanori lake,Suicide lake near Kalwad Basti,Close to airport, etc to improve water situation.
Dhanori lake needs to be preserved and built up as water reservoir for use in the city.

If only the administration wakes up,water problem can be alleviated to a great extent.
Swimming pools in private societies ,water sports in big projects like Lavaaa should be shut down to conserve water.Drinking water should get top priority.
